He was born in Liverpool, where he attended his local Liverpool School of Art then later he also studied in Paris at the Académie Julian. He travelled widely in Great Britain as well as in Australia, South Africa and the Channel Islands. He exhibited a lot of pictures at the Royal Society of British Artists, Royal Cambrian Academy and was an elected
member of both societies. He also showed at the Royal Academy and elsewhere in the country and was elected a member of the Liver Sketching Club in 1879 where he met his future wife Florence Fitzgerald.
